Background of the Study
Academic workload, encompassing the demands of coursework, assignments, exams, and clinical training, is a significant factor influencing the mental well-being of nursing students. Nursing education is renowned for its rigor and high expectations, which can lead to stress, anxiety, burnout, and other mental health challenges (Shittu & Olayinka, 2023). Mental well-being, which includes emotional stability, stress management, and overall mental health, is critical for nursing students as it directly impacts their learning, clinical performance, and ability to provide quality patient care (Emmanuel & Akinwunmi, 2024).
At Osun State College of Health Technology, nursing students are often subjected to a heavy academic workload, which can lead to stress and mental health issues if not managed effectively. The effects of such workload on students' mental well-being have been widely documented in other educational settings, but there is limited research on how academic workload specifically affects nursing students in Nigerian institutions. This study will assess how the academic workload impacts the mental well-being of nursing students and explore the strategies they use to cope with academic pressures.
Statement of the Problem
The academic demands placed on nursing students at Osun State College of Health Technology can be overwhelming, with students often balancing theoretical coursework, clinical practice, and personal responsibilities. This study aims to examine how academic workload affects nursing students’ mental well-being and whether the mental health challenges faced by students are associated with specific aspects of their academic workload.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of academic workload on the mental well-being of nursing students at Osun State College of Health Technology.
2. To identify the specific components of the academic workload that contribute to mental health challenges among nursing students.
3. To explore the coping mechanisms employed by nursing students to manage the impact of academic workload on their mental well-being.
Research Questions
1. How does academic workload affect the mental well-being of nursing students at Osun State College of Health Technology?
2. Which aspects of the academic workload are most closely associated with mental health challenges among nursing students?
3. What coping strategies do nursing students use to manage the effects of academic workload on their mental well-being?
Research Hypotheses
1. High academic workload significantly contributes to mental health challenges among nursing students at Osun State College of Health Technology.
2. There is a significant relationship between the academic workload and stress levels among nursing students.
3. Nursing students who employ effective coping strategies experience less mental distress due to academic workload.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nursing students at Osun State College of Health Technology. Limitations include the subjective nature of self-reported mental well-being assessments and the potential influence of other factors, such as personal life stressors, that may contribute to mental health challenges.
